At NCPD, our skills training programmes equip persons with disabilities with the work-related and social skills necessary for success in the open labour market. Two-year skill training programmes are offered, which include remedial (english, basic mathematics, science and social studies) independent living skills and information technology.

The areas for Skills Training are as follows:

Agriculture / Horticulture Trainees are taught the production of quality saleable produce and services. They are taught how to develop the land, cultivate crops, maintain fruit trees, organize tyre cultures, prepare compost material etc. At the end of this program, trainees are prepared for the National Examination Council (NEC) Exam.

Beauty Culture This area of training is facilitated in an aesthetically pleasing yet functional environment. The trainees learn both the theory and the practical, behind creating beautiful hair, skin and nails. They also practice the highest hygiene and safety techniques in the beauty culture business. Trainees are prepared for the National Examination Council (NEC) Exam.

Book Binding Trainees are taught to bind material to create books, brochures, and magazines by hand as well as how to repair damaged books. They also learn how to construct journal boxes and how to use safety measures while working. Trainees are prepared for the National Examination Council (NEC) Exam.

Food Preparation Trainees are taught skills, as applied to the preparation of food and beverages. They are taught to select the correct tools and equipment and how to use them in a safe manner. After training, trainees should be able to read and follow procedures and guidelines to successfully produce marketable items. They are prepared for the National Examination Council (NEC) and the National Training Agency (NTA) Examination.

Garment Construction Trainees learn to make pattern drafts, use different stitches, use sewing tools and machines, take body measurements, conduct proper measurements for darts, etc with the goal of completing garments. They are also prepared for the National Examination Council (NEC) and the National Training Agency Exam.

Independent Living Skills clients assigned to this programme are individuals who have reached their learning treshold vocationally having been placed in a skill area for an extensive period of time but still need to acquire and continue to reinforce independent living skills. Aditionally, individuals who during the interview process as not being able to cope with a skill but need skills in independent living. These individuals would not be able to function in the open labour market but there are basic skills they can acquire (dressing themselves, making the bed, preparing a simple breakfast, housekeeping etc.)that would enable them to live as independently as possible.

Office Administration program equips trainees with the knowledge and skills to work as an Office Assistant / Receptionist. Trainees develop the ability to perform office procedures, use the typewriter and computer, office machines and make and receive telephone calls. Trainees sit the National Examination Council (NEC) to obtain their Certificate of Acquired Competencies and the National Training Agency (NTA) Exam. They may also pursue the City and Guilds Pitman Typewriting Examination.

Orthopaedic / Welding Trainees are taught to use hand tools, prepare orthopaedic materials, operate drilling machines, join metals, upholster wheelchair sets and other parts, refurbish damaged wheelchairs and decorate metal pieces. They are also taught the fabrication and welding of wrought iron windows, gates and doors. At the end of this program, trainees are prepared for the National Examination Council (NEC) Exam.

Woodwork Trainees develop joinery skills in a safety conscious environment. They learn the proper use of hand tools and machinery and how to repair and construct wooden furniture. They are prepared for the National Examination Council (NEC) and the National Training Agency Exam.

Information Technology Trainees are equipped with the knowledge and skills that will enable them to function effectively in a computerized environment. They are taught computer terminology, wordprocessing, formatting, spreadsheets, graphics, database formation, data entry, and Internet use and terminology. Trainees are prepared for the National Training Agency (NTA) Exam.

Prevocational programme was designed for clients who may have the potential to advance to vocational skill area but initially need to acquire or enhance basic academic skills. They also acquire prevocational skills e.g. the concepts of measurements. Tainees are exposed to Information Technology at the introductory level and are taught basic independent living skills.
